Threshold Training

This is one of the most important things that you can teach your new puppy. Teach them that an open door does not mean you just go through it. Why is this so important? If you open the front door for a guest, and another dog, or a car, or other animal is out there, your dog spots it, bolting out, likely knocking over your guest. But that the least of your worries. What if that dog isn't friendly? What if that car can't stop in time? Your dog could end up hurt, or worse.

It is very easy to do this training. You can start small with their crate. You open the crate door, if they start t0 come out you close it. You do this over and over until they get it. They will lay down and wait, then with your command or "Ok" they get to come out.

Then you can graduate up to standing at the open door while leashed with your dog in a sit. If the dog tries to exit before your "OK" then you shut the door. Again, you do this over and over until it clicks for the dogs.

This also teaches the dog to be calm. Calmly waiting. Not overly excited. So that when it's time to take them on a walk they don't drag you out the door with intense excitement and finish dragging you two blocks before they tire out.

This training method also emphasizes why crate training in general is extremely valuable. Just one of the many benefits of crate training your dog.

If you learn visually, South End Dog Training has several great videos on threshold training readily available on social media.

Threshold training saves lives. Am I being dramatic? hmmm... maybe. But only if you are willing to gamble with the life of your pup. Maybe nothing bad would ever happen. But maybe it would, and that maybe carries too great a risk to ignore.
